Is it better to continue running with shin splints, or pause and rest?

I grappled with shin splints when training for the Birmingham Half Marathon last year. It started as a blunt discomfort after a training run but became painful, very painful. Eventually, each time I went for a run the agonizing shin splints would pitch in pounding away and removing all the fun from the training! If it ain't fun I don't want to do this, that's certain.

It became so terrible that I needed to quit and rest up for a couple of weeks to let the shin splints tone down and give the problem time to rehabilitate. This worked for me but, naturally, the result was I missed training and when you're concentrated on the perfect time you hope for in an event it's very infuriating. I reckon I would have got a improved time if I hadn't given up those four weeks off from training. I managed to swim but--

If only I had considered to have a massage. It never occurred to me at the time but according to this outstanding post on shin splints a top quality sports massage could've sorted my shin splints and got me back running way more quickly! From now on , I'll be considering using sports massage as part of my preparation for these endurance events. This blog is well worth a read particularly if you have painful shins!
